What is the meaning of Money in the workplace?

-Financial rewards are a fundamental part of employment

-pay has multiple meanings

-men value money more than women

-cultural values influence the meaning and value of money

4 Types of Rewards(see image 1)

-Membership and seniority based rewards

-Job Status-values given to toughest job, most responsibility, need most skill

-Competency-Based Rewards

-Task Performance: what did you do versus what do you know?

Improving Reward Effectiveness

-team rewards for interdependent jobs

-ensure rewards are valued-ASK!

-watch out for unintended consequences

Job Design-where/how does a successful employee start

-assign tasks to a job

-organization goals: to create jobs that can be performed efficiently yet employees are motivated and engaged

Job Specialization

-dividing work into separate but unique components

-Scientific management: concept of the original assembly line

Job Rotation: moving from one job to another minimizes repetitive strain

Job Enrichment: Given more responsibility for scheduling, coordinating, and planning one’s own work
